Shelley called us about her parents. Joe and Sharon were getting older, their primary bathroom in Oro Valley was cramped and unsafe, and there was nowhere for a caregiver to stand. What she did not want was to move them out of the house they knew.
We sat down with all three of them, built 2D and 3D renderings before anything came apart, and did the primary suite first so the safety problem got solved immediately. The finished room is a wet room with a curbless shower roomy enough for a caregiver to help, a walk-in tub, grab bars, and an adjustable handheld on a slide bar. It reads as a good bathroom, not a hospital one.
That project is most of what our bathroom work in Oro Valley looks like. This is a town where a large share of residents intend to stay put, and around Sun City Oro Valley Library and out through Rancho Vistoso and La Reserve the question is rarely how to make a bathroom look newer. It is how to make it work for a long time without it looking like a medical room.
We call that high-end aesthetic aging-in-place, and the qualifier is doing real work. Barrier-free entries, frameless glass, comfort-height fixtures, blocking set behind the tile now so a bar can go up later without opening a wall, and lighting that accounts for eyes that are not twenty-five anymore. Very little of it announces itself. All of it is doing something.
Not every bathroom here is about accessibility. The same Oro Valley project included a second bathroom for Shelley herself, built around the freestanding slipper tub she had always wanted, with a full circular curtain. Custom showers, tub-to-shower conversions, and primary suite rebuilds are all regular work.

Our History in Oro Valley
Oro Valley has a demographic profile that shapes the remodeling work here more than the architecture does. The town has drawn retirees and part-year residents since the large age-restricted developments went in, and a lot of the housing stock was designed and sold to people who expected this to be the last house they bought.
The trouble is that the bathrooms in those houses were built to the standards of their decade. Standard-height toilets, tubs you step over, single-pane shower doors on tracks that collect grime, and almost never any blocking in the walls for a future grab bar. The rooms are often generously sized. They are just laid out for a younger version of the person now living there.
That is a good problem, because square footage is the expensive part and it is already there. Most of the bathrooms we remodel in Oro Valley do not need to grow. They need the walls moved a few feet, the shower rebuilt without a curb, and the storage rethought. Neighborhoods around Catalina Vista Recreation Center and out toward Cañada del Oro River Park are full of houses in exactly that position.
Working on a house that is already finished and lived in is its own skill. We seal the work zone, keep the dust out of the rest of the home, and sequence the trades so the family is not living around an open wall longer than it takes. Will an accessible bathroom look institutional?
Not the way we build them. High-end aesthetic aging-in-place is the whole specialty. A curbless shower, frameless glass, and concealed blocking behind the tile all read as a nice bathroom, not a medical one. The accessibility is in the construction, not the appearance.
Can you prepare a bathroom for future needs without changing how it looks now?
Yes, and it is one of the smarter things you can do during a remodel. We set blocking in the walls where bars might go later, run the electrical for a future bidet seat, and size the doorway properly. None of it shows until the day you need it.
How long will I be without the bathroom?
It depends on the scope and whether we are moving plumbing walls. We give you a real schedule before construction starts and plan around which other bathrooms in the house stay usable. Frei finishes on schedule 98 percent of the time.
Do you do standalone shower replacements?
Custom shower design and installation is something we do, including tub-to-shower conversions and barrier-free builds. What we do not take on is standalone repair work, paint-only jobs, or fixture assembly.
