Planning Your Bathroom Remodel Budget

Planning your budget for a bathroom remodel goes beyond knowing how much you can spend. A well-thought-out remodel is an investment that requires careful planning. Here are some factors to consider when budgeting for your remodel:

National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) Recommendation: The NKBA suggests spending 5-10% of your home's value for your bathroom remodel.
Project Scope: The scope of your remodel significantly influences the cost. Minor updates like replacing fixtures are less expensive than major overhauls involving layout changes or high-end materials.
Make A Wish List: Prioritize your must-haves for your new bathroom and communicate with your contractor to ensure you're thrilled with the result.

Bathroom Remodeling Cost Breakdown

Once you have an overall budget, you can break down the specific costs for your bathroom remodel. Here’s an average cost distribution based on NKBA data:

These percentages serve as a general guideline. Every bathroom remodel is unique, and the cost breakdown will vary based on your project. Some remodels may include all these elements, while others focus on just a few.

Explore our bathroom remodeling page to learn more about our remodeling costs and services.

Additional Factors Affecting Costs

Beyond the project scope and materials, other factors can influence the cost of your bathroom remodel:

Size Of Your Bathroom: Larger bathrooms require more materials and labor, increasing the overall cost.
Demolition And Removal: If your remodel involves removing walls, flooring, or existing fixtures, consider the costs of demolition and debris removal.
Permits And Inspections: Securing necessary permits and plans add to the overall cost.
Labor Rates: Labor costs can vary depending on the contractor's experience and the project's complexity.

The Truth Behind Average Bathroom Remodeling Costs You Find Online

When researching bathroom remodeling costs online, you’ll often come across average price estimates. However, these figures can be misleading. Why? Because they usually don’t consider your home’s specific needs, the quality of materials, or local labor rates.

Overly General Estimates: Online averages may reflect a broad range, from budget remodels to luxury transformations, leaving you with no clear idea of where your project will fall.
Material Quality Matters: The type of fixtures, finishes, and materials you choose will significantly impact your costs, and these averages often omit this crucial detail.
Labor Costs Vary: Local labor rates differ from other areas, and high-quality contractors typically charge more due to their expertise, skills, and professionalism.

Instead of relying on broad online estimates, it is always best to consult with a local, experienced contractor who can provide an accurate quote based on your unique needs.

Contractor Red Flags: Why Are Their Prices So Low?

It can be tempting to choose the contractor with the lowest bid, but beware of these red flags:

Always ask detailed questions and choose a contractor who values quality, communication, and professionalism. A full design and material selection before your project starts.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Hired Frei Construction to install our tile floor after our previous contractor screwed up the first floor. Joe and his crew were very professional and took the time to make sure the floor was as level as it could be prior to the tile being installed. His installers took time to make sure it was installed correctly, and if we had any questions or problems, they addressed them immediately. We also had trim work done it was a professional job and they cleaned up after themselves. they treated our home as if it was their own would recommend Frei Construction. It is a little pricey, but it was worth it. Wish we would’ve gone with them sooner.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We decided to leave Texas and come back home. We found a house in March and knew it needed some serious remodeling. Joe Frier’s name was given to us and we never looked back. While we were still in Texas, Joe went above and beyond to keep us posted on every step. He asked questions, suggested ideas and also met us at our new home every time we flew back. Joe sent pictures of the progress, but the pictures didn’t capture the beautiful and amazing changes. My husband has new ideas all the time and Joe was always available to make whatever changes we wanted! The house we purchased in March, was just that—a house, but now it’s a home that was remodeled into a beautiful home. Joe, thank you and all of your crews for your making our forever home, forever!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thank you, Frei Remodeling and Construction!

The team at Frei Remodeling took care of our house addition, which included two new bedrooms and a bathroom. They handled each phase of the project expertly and professionally, from conception through completion.

Everyone in the Frei network was friendly, considerate, and professional.

And once the project took off, each build phase was efficient and had minimal impact on our daily routines. The team was responsive to any questions we had and communicated well.

If you are in the Tucson area and have a home project in mind, I recommend checking with the Frei team.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Working with Frei remodeling was an excellent experience for us! It was great working with Joe from start to finish and I wish more business owners were like him. He goes out of his way to make sure you are satisfied with everything you've asked for.

I really appreciated his fantastic communication and all of his subcontractors were great. Joe was very accommodating when we realized we needed to adjust our scope of work due to unexpected financial constraints, and we were still able to make our interior remodel a reality. His team had no issues creating new doors, closing up other doors, installing new walls, and working with our specific needs. The quality of work of the construction, drywall, painters, and electrical subcontractors was well above average and they were all pleasant to work with.

Bottom line, I'd highly recommend him for any kind of remodel and would definitely work with him again!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The bottom line: Joe is excellent. Hire him.

Joe did a total kitchen tear out and remodel for me. A project like that is naturally disruptive, but how many people can say at the end that they didn’t experience one second of aggravation? Joe eliminated stress by his meticulous planning and scheduling. He communicated clearly and responded to questions promptly. His subcontractors showed up when they were expected, and they were as detail-oriented and quality-oriented as Joe. They were quiet, neat, and easy to have in the house, and it was clear they respected Joe. Problems arose on the job that had nothing to do with the project at hand. A house that’s almost 50 years old will have its surprises, but Joe found solutions quickly and did not charge anything extra. I was nervous before the project started, but Joe’s calmness and self-confidence boosted my confidence. He reassured me by saying, “C’mon, it’ll be fun.” He clearly loves his work. I am already planning a master bath remodel. And yes, it will be fun to work with Joe again. Before and after pictures below.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were impressed with the Frei reputation and Better Business rating. We really were captured by the Frei "process." We embarked on the remodeling journey long distance from our home in the Rockies while Joe Frei and his professionals remodeled our master bath in Vail, Arizona. Joe kept in touch with us all of the way via weekly meeting with Zoom and postings of phots on his site of the progress. We were fully informed all of the way. Hiccups along the way were quickly addressed. Frei Construction even installed an instant hot water dispenser in the kitchen and a water softener system for our Arizona home while remodeling our master bath. We were delighted with the final product and the cleanliness of our home after the project was completed. When we arrived in Arizona, Joe Frei was one of the first to greet us and walk us through our project. Joe provided us with various warranties and lien releases, and reminded us that he is available for any service calls that we may need involving his project.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I bought this single story house knowing I had to make the master bath handicapped friendly. I researched new home builders and learned that a bathtub in the master bath is not in demand, however, a bathtub should be in an additional bathroom. So I came up with this true walk-in shower design with no shower door by removing the bathtub, decided on the marble tiles that were plentiful in stock and then sought out a very capable contractor. I learned that Frei Remodeling has done exactly this type of job before and I was confident after meeting that we were going to have a great experience bringing the design to life, which is what happened. This master bath remodel has to be done with skill, experience and patience. Joe and his team understood this and had expert experience for all phases of this job. The finer details were always discussed with me before implemented. My big desires were for a long and tall pony wall providing wall space for previously missing his/her towel racks and has room for large hidden his/her shower utilities cut-outs, plus two corner seats for my handicapped showering and drying. Every artisan who was tasked by Joe did absolutely the best work. A great experience doing this job and getting the needed functionality with quality materials and exquisite symmetry.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joe Frei of Frei Remodeling is an excellent contractor! He is professional, personable, does high quality work, stays on schedule, is great at communicating, and uses a tool to provide visual updates on a daily basis. He also works with quality subcontractors and stays on top of their work. Joe just completed a small bathroom remodel for me that has exceeded my expectations! It was a complete remodel down to the studs replacing absolutely everything. I am waiting to install a mirror and I will repaint but you can see from the photos how beautifully it turned out! I am beyond pleased.

I had to move out for two weeks since I only have one bathroom and staying on schedule was essential for me. I stayed with friends and family in the Phoenix area so was not nearby to see the progress but I knew what was happening at all times and saw uploaded photos of the progress every day. He is the best contractor I have ever worked with!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My wife and I are very happy with a major remodel of our master bathroom that was done by Frei Remodeling & Construction.
Joe Frei was excellent to work with and we highly recommend him. Everything to do the remodel, from the initial design, choice of materials, and the work itself was done professionally and was of high quality.
Our remodel was extensive. It involved the removal of a 1980's vintage sunken tub, the vanity, a built-in linen closet, air conditioning soffits, cement floor tiles, and an interior wall.
This was replaced by a new walk-in shower, vanity, free-standing tub, toilet, a new exterior window on the west wall, and extensive tile work.
Joe and his sub-contractors were very respectful, and the work was of high quality and done on schedule. We can especially recommend the tile work.
Joe was easy to work with and always kept his cool when issues arose either with his subcontractors or with us changing our mind about something.
In situations where I would have "lost it" Joe handled it very professionally and pragmatically: is attitude was just "how do I fix this to make us happy."
Frei Remodeling may be more expensive than other contractors, but in the long run they are worth every penny.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. 6 months ago, I reached out to Frei Remodeling to help update my parents' bathroom for safety. This project turned into painting the house, remodeling the other bathrooms and fixing structural issues. Frei Remodeling has been a fantastic business to collaborate with on all projects. I trust Joe, the owner, to ensure the jobs are done correctly and in a reasonable amount of time. He is very responsive and hands on throughout the projects. All of the details are of high finish and the end results are perfection. When speaking with his subcontractors, they talk about the high standards he holds for them all. His subcontractors know the expectations and abide by them. Every person who came through our house was considerate and treated everything respectfully. I never worried about leaving my parents alone to run an errand or two and my dog was always watched and protected when doors were open. I appreciate all of the hard work that has been done to update my home. It is magnificent.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joe remodeled our master bathroom last year and the experience was fantastic. He was responsive, receptive to new ideas and changes and was incredibly transparent through the entire process. The remodel was extensive, involving ripping out an old tub and shower, removing the floors and old cabinets, installing a new free-standing tub, expanding the shower, all new tile floors, and new cabinets with granite tops. He was very flexible when we were picking out all the things we wanted, and never hesitated to make suggestions or accept changes during the process to make our vision look even better. I held off writing a review until our 1 year walk through. The workmanship has held up impeccably, and we couldn’t be happier with the product/work we received.

From the demo guys to the installers, every single guy we encountered was incredibly professional and always on time. Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joe did a demo job for a laundry room homeowner remodel project I have, and hung a special order door for me, very precisely and timely. Excellent work, and they clean up after themselves well! He is very conscientious of the scope of work. So when you use his professional services, be very specific and explicit what work you need done, and what might come up in the process. Joe does high quality work for exactly what is paid for.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wanted shower stall remodeled and enlarged. Joe did for a reasonable price and reasonably time. Had other that just wanted to replace existing surround walls. Not what I wanted! Joe listens and hears what you say from both a woman or man.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This was my first remodeling experience, and suffice it to say, I was quite nervous going into this bathroom remodeling project. Mr. Frei quickly calmed my nerves with his peaceful and reassuring attitude. Not only was he professional, responsive, and gave me work that was of high quality, he is a caring and kind individual that was always making sure my questions were answered, and that I was happy with each phase of the project.

The finished project was exactly as I planned it to look, but it looked better than I imaged.

I look forward to my next remodeling job and with the assurance that I will again get wonderful results using Joe Frei Remodeling and Construction.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joe remodeled both of our bathrooms and we have zero complaints. We appreciated how responsive and timely he was at every step of the project. He was able to work around a few scheduling conflicts we had in the middle of the project. All of his subcontractors were a pleasure to work with as well. We would not hesitate to reach out to him again for future projects.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Frei Construction just completed remodeling work on our kitchen and we absolutely love it. We highly recommend Joe for at least three reasons. 1. Exceptional workmanship through and through, down to every detail. 2. The work was completed well before the agreed upon date. 3. Joe was a pleasure to work with. He kept us posted on the progress, let us know what to expect as the next steps and promptly responded to all our communications. We without hesitation will recommend Joe and his crew to anyone looking for a construction company.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an idea for a project and contacted Frei Remodeling to determine feasibility and approximate cost and timeline of the intended project. The website allowed me to upload pictures and schedule a follow-up phone call with ease. Although we ultimately did not decide to pursue the project, Joe was exceptionally helpful in setting realistic expectations and being responsive. I tried several other local contractors who flat out told me they weren't willing to help at all or simply never responded. Thanks Joe for the excellent service!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joe and his employee, Cameron at Frei Remodeling were excellent. I spent 9 months trying to find an installer who was willing to remodel my existing 3x3 stall shower and adjacent garden tub into an large walk in shower with oversized, difficult to work with tiles (2'x4' wall tiles and 8"x8" floor tiles with an invisible trench drain. One of the potential remodelers I had strung me along for 3 of those months. I had just about given up but decided to give it one more try and I am ecstatic that I got in touch with Joe at Frei Remodeling. He took time to ask me a lot of questions to understand my expectations and any concerns I may have. They are not a budget installer by any means, but they do not do budget quality work. He took extra steps to make sure every component of my install was meeting my expectations, kept workspaces clear and clean at the end of each day, and checked in throughout. The consistent communication, timeliness and quality of work was outstanding. We ran into 1 mishap with a shipping company, who lost a major component, causing a delay, and it took 0 effort from me to stay in the loop of what was happening. He took the initiative of working this out with the company and gave me timelines and options in the process. I will be using Frei Remodeling for every single renovation from here on out.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently engaged Frei Remodeling & Construction to convert three full walls surrounding an interior staircase into two pony walls and a wrought iron railing, and to create a pass-through opening from the kitchen to the living room area. The goal was to create a more open floor plan, and Joe and his team did a phenomenal job of turning my vision into a reality.

On day one Joe and his assistant sealed off all surrounding areas with zip walls to prevent dust and debris from entering the adjacent living spaces during demolition, drywall, painting, etc. This is the first time I have seen a contractor take that extra step to protect flooring, furnishings, and personal items during the remodeling process.

I could not have asked for better communication while the work was being done. Joe would ask me at the beginning and end of every day if I had any questions or concerns, and he kept me apprised of what was going on every step of the way.

The attention to detail and workmanship were outstanding from start to finish. Joe’s understanding of what I wanted to accomplish resulted in a finished product that was even more amazing than what I had envisioned.

Frei Remodeling & Construction is a thorough, detailed, and customer-oriented company with a passion for their business and a commitment to ensuring their client’s complete satisfaction. Any homeowner choosing to work with them will not be disappointed!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had major water damage in a master walk-in closet and the entire closet had to be gutted and rebuilt. Joe was the only contractor who actually answered the phone the first time I called and got the process started right away. He was incredibly efficient and did really high quality work. Best of all, he communicated extremely well with us every step of the way. We highly recommend him!

Joe removed a leaky shower insert and built a beautiful shower with quality materials in its place. He took all of our concerns to heart and more than once said he wanted us to be 100% happy. He is a trustworthy, down to earth guy who listens.

Specifically, I had them install all of the windows and interior and exterior doors. I felt like Joe was a great communicator and took the time to understand what I needed and when I needed it done by. They did an excellent job and I would recommend them to anyone.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Frei Remodeling took care of everything. They provided samples of tile, grout, shower heads/faucets and made recommendations for tile sizes and placement to ensure a good scale and balance. They worked with me to do anything I asked of them. I particularly like a very pretty tiled window frame. I am extremely pleased with the results.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joe has done various jobs for myself and my family and honestly I wouldn’t hire anyone else! We have had bathrooms and kitchens remodeled, hallways redesigned and a basic closet turned into an open walk-in closet. Every job he has done has left me amazed in the detail and pride he takes in his work. Recently I had both the interior and exterior of my house painted, it was completed flawlessly. Joe is quick to communicate and I am always confident that the job will be done right, with precision and with the best materials. Joe and his crew work hard and get jobs done swiftly- I also rest easy knowing that Joe has insurance for his workers. I cannot say enough about his professionalism and quality of work. I’m already planning my next project!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Frei Remodeling worked on 3 separate projects for us in 2017 and 2018: remodeled a small office bathroom into a handicap accessible bathroom, remodeled office plumbing, electrical and doorways, and enclosed a patio space to create an office space. The three projects were completed carefully, thoroughly, timely and perfectly. Additionally, Joe Frei has the highest level of reliability and trustworthiness.
